Raga and the Baseball

Raga is the third of the fish kleshas, or obstacles.  It means "attachment" in Sanskrit.  One day during my physical therapy appointment the meaning of raga and its affect were played out in great detail.

Why Yoga for Tweens?

Robin Cohen

When the school day ends, most kids find themselves busy with the myriad of activities available to them. They play instruments and learn dance, gymnastics, tae-kwon-do. They play soccer, run track, play football, act in the drama club, and bake gourmet cakes. The list of activities goes on. There’s something for everyone!

But as far as activities go, yoga these days seems to have inherited second-class status. It is often given a sad good-bye when there’s a toss-up between it and another class. Which to me doesn’t make much sense. Because the benefits of yoga are far-reaching.

And so, here, in no specific order, are listed some benefits of yoga for tweens. After reading the list, you’ll be asking yourself, “Why Would Any Tween Choose to Be a Yoga Non-Participant?” I ask myself the same question!

Yoga for Tweens will:

  • foster a willingness to try new things

  • promote confidence

  • develop concentration

  • improve balance

  • quiet the mind (alleviate stress and anxiety)

  • build a strong and more flexible body

  • internalize respect for self and others

  • teach problem solving strategies

When a choice of activities is to be made, at least consider yoga. It’s benefits are far-reaching.
